COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

PROJECT : HEALING GARDEN FOR THE ELDERLY

INTRODUCTION

Community Service Initiative is a form of service learning subject initiated by the ministry of education by using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among students for their community and the world at large. Ultimately, in the end of this module, the subject is to help in developing students’ personal and social responsibility. Through this module, it help students to learn the values of life as well as develops positive world-views by being more sensitive, thoughtful, responsible, and acquainted with the community and its needs. CSI also offers opportunities for the students to realistically practice their knowledge, creativity, innovation and design skills in providing solutions to the community needs and problems. It is also an opportunity for student to be able to use their skills and knowledge in the real-life situation.

PROJECT DETAILS

In this project, we are to work together as a team for architectural, culture, and environmental enhancing activities in the communities of different socio-economic status and social groups. The series of community services are offered under four (4) categories/themes and as a group, we are to choose and to execute the project in the best possible manner. My group have chosen Theme 2 which is the Self-Sustaining Community and the community chosen was the Old Folks Home. One of the reasons why we choose this theme is because this project will help us realize the social problems and the welfare of those people who are less fortunate than us. Also, we will be able to help them by providing a better space for their living. This will also be a great way to strengthen the bond between our communities. Not only that, most elderly at the old folks home tend to be lonely as they were sent there away from their family and closed one. We also want the elderly community to feel more appreciated by having younger generations like us to help and entertain them as well as to make them feel happy. My group for this project consist of Ghaida Rashad, Shery Edrina and Tasya.

Also big thanks to our beloved tutor, Pn Yati for helping and guiding us through-out the design process and project. Through this project, I am able to learn and constantly developing myself on communicating skills while approaching the public and to convince them to spend time with us. I have also develop a strong sense of social responsibility and learn the importance of teamwork while working in a group.
