BUILDING STRUCTURE

PROJECT 1 : FETTUCCINE TRUSS BRIDGE

In a group of 5, we were required to design and construct a fettucini bridge of 350mm clear span and maximum weight of 70g. These requirements are to be met, or else it may result in reduction of grade. The bridge will be then tested to fail. Other than aesthetic value, the design of the bridge must be of high efficiency. Not only that, we also have to produce an A4 report that consist of the detailed record of material strength testing/evaluation, detailed report /photographs of construction of the bridge and detailed structural analysis of the bridge. My group consist of Kimberley Ee, Farah Akmal, Shery Edrina and Ghaida Rashad.

REFLECTION

From this assignment, I learnt how to evaluate, explore and improve the different attributes of construction materials. I am also able to apply my understanding of load distribution in a truss as well as identify the members that are in tension or compression.

PROJECT 2 : ANALYSIS OF A REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING

This project is divided into two parts, group and individual. In a group of 3, we were required to find floor plans of a 2-storey bungalow/semidetached house and analyse the plans and identify all the columns and beams then produce the structural plans. Individually, each group member need to select 6 different beams and 4 different columns from the structural plans in Task 1 and individually analyse the 6 beams and produce the following for each: load diagram, shear force diagram, bending moment diagram and identify the appropriate size of the beams. Not only that, we also need to analyse the 4 columns to identify the column load and calculate the size of columns. My group members for this project consist of Kimberley Ee and Farah Akmal.

REFLECTION

From this assignment, I learnt to produce a complete documentation of a structural system of a case study and understand the concept of structural analysis.
